Once home to the Naumkeag branch of the Massachusett tribe, Danvers is a town well-known for agriculture and history with the Salem Witch Trials. Originally called Salem Village, the town was formed despite the King’s wishes. Presently, Danvers residents embrace their past, taking part in maintaining historical properties and preserving sites. The town also offers easy access to parks, golf courses, and entertainment venues.
Danvers has been home to many influential individuals, including Israel Putnam, a general from the American Revolution, and Rebecca Nurse, a resident who was eventually convicted of witchcraft. Both residences, General Israel Putnam House and the Rebecca Nurse Homestead, still stand, and are popular with tourists. Danvers houses one of the oldest living fruit trees, the Endicott Pear Tree, as well as the Judge Samuel Holten House, and Danvers State Hospital.
At one point, the town manufactured shoes. It’s also known for pioneering two unique vegetables, the Danvers Onion and the Danvers Half-Long Carrot. Today, Danvers is home to families and young professionals, with a quiet, hometown feel, welcoming community, as well a variety of public and private schools. North Shore Community College is the closest college, but the proximity to Boston allows access to some of the finest universities in the country. Danvers is also popular for the ample parks, rivers and ponds, that offer great outdoor activities to residents and visitors year-round.
Danvers is located between New Hampshire and Boston, 63 miles south of the New Hampshire state border, and 21 miles north of Boston. Neighboring towns include Salem, Beverly and Marblehead.
