Essex is a quiet, rural town in Northeastern Massachusetts. Settled in 1819, and originally within Ipswich, the town was once named Chebacco Parish. Today, the town maintains most of it’s original small-town charm with it’s array of historic shops, seafood restaurants, and influence in the clamming industry. Tourists frequent the annual Taste of Essex festival and Essex ClamFest, as well as the many tributes to shipbuilding.
Once home to the Agawam tribe, Essex made history when it petitioned to construct a meeting house in the early 1800s. When the residents were denied, with the context that "no man shall raise a meeting house", the women of Essex opted to raise the meeting house themselves. The town is still known for it’s independence and integrity, taking great pride in the famous Essex clam and claim to have invented the fried clam.
Essex provides easy access for residents and visitors to Chebacco Lake, the Essex River and the Atlantic Ocean. The town is diligent to preserving its local wildlife, with protected areas such as the Crane Wildlife Refuge and the state Wildlife Management Area. Essex is also popular for the many antique shops, which add color and character to the already picturesque town. The rich history in shipbuilding also attracts visitors, as at one point, the town was a key player in the industry, crafting sail-powered wooden boats through World War II.
Aside from its foothold in the tourism industry, Essex is a thriving community perfect for young professional and young families. Individuals seeking the benefits of a close-knit, cozy seaside town will find refuge in North Shore’s local treasure. Located 25 miles north of Boston and 247 miles from New York City, neighboring towns include Hamilton, Ipswich, and Gloucester.
